Bio

Philip has been a music teacher for 27 years, and during that time has worked hard to increase the profile of music education in Singapore. His main aim has been to allow pupils to express themselves creatively through music, as everyone is potentially a composer. His own experiences have taught him that music can be deeply rewarding and restorative. His students have been very successful and gone on to a wide range of careers, including music performance and degrees in composition, and his connections with them have been helpful in creating music opportunities for his current students.

Committed to innovation, Philip has incorporated electronic music composition into his work with younger students, also exploring the interactions between music and visuals. This has had huge benefits, particularly for some of Philip’s students with autism, one of whom went on to perform at the ASEAN Para games (Asia’s Paralympics).

Philip served as Creative Director of the opening and closing ceremonies of those games and designed a complex two-year programme of learning leading to the ceremonies, which were described as ‘spectacular’ by Singapore’s Prime Minister. He has had further recognition for his work in receiving the Young Artist Award from Singapore’s National Arts Council in 2007. Since 2000 he has served on many panels and committees to promote and support music education, and as an external examiner. With the prize funds, he would set up a state-of-the-art music studio – a cross between a school and a music lab, which will support his lessons, music camps, and student learning.
